Hi
my mom was diagnosed with lung cancer with mets to the brain on dec 14th 2008, still with us, only had 5 sessions of wbr, is now on 10mg of steroids (dex), losec for stomach, tramadol for pain though is is rarely in pain. However she has developed a clot i(dvt) in her calf and now we have to inject her at night with innohep 1100iu to disperse it and she also has had diarriaha (spelt wrong i know but too tired to correct it!). She was hospitalized to confirm the clot but sent home with it and still with the runs, i'm so annoyed with the hospital system but anyway what should we expect now?? Her walk has really detiorated to the point where we mostly use a wheelchair, sometimes her thought process is slow to respond but just when you start to get worried she improves, myself and sisters (2) are our mums caregivers and we really haven't a clue what we are doing but mum is happy to be at home and we wouldn't want it any other way. Any body else have to deal with incontinence and clots?
Thanking you

Hello galwaygirl;
Sorry to hear of your Moms condition. Not familiar with the bowel problem, though I prefer it loose over being constipated. But I have clot problem and half to give myself injections with Lovenox to thin the blood. Initially I had thought that it was for removing the clot but not so, just to thin the blood so more clots are not formed so that the clot does not keep building up. As it is with my leg under my knee there is a restricted vein behind my knee and the clots collected there and it took months for it to go away on thinners. I don't think your Mom is any better off in the hospital than at home, it is better for her to be comfortable, of coarse this not very easy on the caregiver in the short term. None of the doctors have a crystal ball that works on clots, just basic procedures that may differ from one Oncologist to another, but they give it there best shot. My doctors have been open to my concerns and will change their format to meet my needs. But as clots go, I found few doctors that are real comfortable dealing with them. There are many problems that clots can cause to cause death all by themselves and know way of knowing for sure what will happen, if you were a doctor with that information what do you tell the patient or the care giver, give them percentages? Thats about all the docs got and it sure is not comforting. Some of the best most comforting information I've gotten is here in this room from caring people that have been there.
God Bless you and your Mom, may things go well.
Dan

thanks for the reply Dan, they are hoping to move mum to a hospice tomorrow to deal with the incontinence, the docs will not give her warfarin which is used as a blood thinning agent here as that brings its own problems which they do not want her to deal with. Hopefully the hospice will sort out everything and that should make her more comfortable. I hope treatment works out well for you.
