Switched from the oxiplantian + 5Fu every two weeks to the once a week 1100mg of just 5FU.
Anyone got any comments on the side effects of just 5FU each week.
All I know is the oxiplantain was the worst time of my life... _________________ 1/11/08 - Removal of Stage III Colon Cancer

Why was this the worst time of your life.
I start FOLFOX next Monday for three days a week, then the next week off for four cycles then if my infection is still under control I will have the FOLFOX for a week long for four weeks with radiation then surgery, then more chemo.
My surgeon told me that the oxaliplatin, can cause people to lose the feelings in their feet and hands permanently. My oncologist told me that they check for this and will discontinue if it starts any neuropathy.
What did you experience? I asked if the first dose could cause permanent damage and I was told that it couldn't. Can it?
Thanks,

I had three treatments of the Oxi - 5FU and yes the neuropathy hit me very hard, anyting under body temp, to drink, touch just made me sick.
Even breathing cool air. Felt as if my insides were numb.
So now being off it two weeks, I am feeling much better, on the first week of the 5FU and the side effects are alot less. _________________ 1/11/08 - Removal of Stage III Colon Cancer

Hi Dpotter - glad to hear it is going better for you. Are you on continuous infusion of 5Fu with a pump or do you go to an infusion center just once a week or so? It sound like this drug is going to be a lot more tolerable for you.

What do you mean by numb. Can you breathe? That is my worst fear. I've been dealing with neuropathy for almost twenty years now and don't want to go down that road again.

By numb I mean like if you drank novicane... Just felt funky.
Yes I could breath, but at times it was not fun. _________________ 1/11/08 - Removal of Stage III Colon Cancer

Would someone like me who sometimes fear of not being able to breathe, find it hard to take this drug?
Also, how long did the numbness last, thirty seconds, a minute, an hour, a day, a week, longer?
I've been doing a lot of praying about this. With my infection, I would rather they just try the 5FU first to see how I do before adding other drugs to the mix.
Thanks,

Oxaliplantin is some strong stuff. Its been a month since my last chemo treatment and the numbness in my fingers has not gotten any better. I think it has gotten worse. Anyone know how long that side effect lasts? _________________ 10/01/07 - Removal of Stage III Colon Cancer Tumor and Temporary Colostomy

Hey Reb,
Yeah its been 4 Weeks for me just on just 5FU, and my feet and tips of my fingers till are not right, they still tingle, and ache.
All I can say is, If I would of stayed on it, I am sure it would of caused something perm.
I hope it gets better for you soon.

I am having a hard time writing and picking things up. My fingertips feel numb. I hope this is not permanent. I need to talk to my doctor about it. _________________ 10/01/07 - Removal of Stage III Colon Cancer Tumor and Temporary Colostomy
