My MIL is newly diagnosed with stage IIa nonsmall cell lung cancer. The doctors are recommending surgery. My MIL is being very difficult and is refusing to even see a surgeon. We (the family) are thinking that maybe chemo is best route to take. There are new drugs that seem to be working very well on people without surgery. She is 74 and not in the greatest health. We are starting from scratch and need some direction as to doctors and hospitals. I know that Sloan Kettering is where she should go but she is not cooperating because it is a hour away. Any input would be appreciated. Thanks.

Hi,

Sorry about this diagnosis and your MIL being difficult. MSK is the only one I know of out there, but why don't you call them and ask for a recommendation closer to home? MSK can do the initial work-up and surgery and can also coordinate her treatments with a local oncologist. I've seen many people do this type of thing.

Wow -- the chance for surgery is huge and most late stage people would give their right arm for this opportunity. I'm sure this is very frustrating to you.
