My Mom is 66 years old. Last May she had been having left should pain and was sent for an MRI. The MRI came back with "diffusely abnormal bone marrow signal involving the humeral shaft and acromion". Okay, then the blood work....Alkaline Phosphatase was high (liver enzyme). We have continued to follow up and as of Dec '07, doctors are saying it's MGUS. However, it's hard to know what's happening when the beta-2 microglobulin is 3.74. My concern is: shouldn't the doctors be doing bone marrow biopsy at this point? The Myeloma protocol for spine, skull and pelvis were clear with the exception of some red marrow reconversion, but I would think they should be following up on that shoulder. Now the other shoulder swelled and went back down and hurts. Sorry for rambling, I am exhausted. I have all test results and would be happy to post any info that would help.

Any thoughts are appreciated. Wink

Holly, I am very sorry about your mother's health concerns. I do not have enough knowledge about MGUS or MM to even guess and an answer to your question about a biopsy. What has her medical team said?

You and your mother are in my thoughts and prayers.

Thanks brainman. Well she has a faint IgG Kappa happening and a left shoulder mri from last May showing diffuse marrow infiltration. Her spine, pelvis and skull show some red marrow reconversion. Her beta 2 microglobulin is 3.74 :'( and her ldh has doubled in 4 months. In the past two weeks her right shoulder started hurting her and I can't so much as touch her without her having pain. The doctors want more tests to confirm MM, so that is what we are going to do on March 31.

My question to any MM'ers out there is: Are the bones to the touch that painful in Myeloma? I know bone pain and swelling is, but when I barely touch her shoulder it's awful for her. Just wondering if anyone else out there has experienced this.

Thank u for your prayers brainman. Smile
