My mother had two colon polyps of 1.5-2.00 cm in the sigmoid colon. The GI refered her to surgeon for surgical removal. Later on another GI took it out through a colonoscop. He cut the polyps but left the stalk behind for removal after a month. The biopsy result shows: "Sections examined from each of the tissues coded "distal large colon" and "proximal polyp large colon" reveal polypoidal colonic mucosa forming tubulovillous configuration. The lining epithelium shows moderate to marked dysplasia in the form of large pleomorphic nulei extending up to the apical cytoplasm with prominent to inconspicuos nucleoli. Mitotic activity is noted at all levels. In areas infolding to the lining epithilium is also noted. The underlying stroma and the stalk show moderate chronic non-specific inflammation. No evidence of stromal invasion is identified. There is no evidence of malignancy in the material examined"

Now I am not sure if the decission of taking it out through colonoscope was right decission or it has to be a surgery? Can any one answer the question?

Thanks,

Mike

Hi Mike. I am not sure what you are asking. The biopsy report says that is was a benign polyp so taking it out in the colonoscopy should be OK. She will just need follow-ups on a periodic basis to make sure in the future a polyp does not turn into a cancer.

Best wishes.

I mean to say, is it possible that some high-grade dysplasia cells are left behind in the colon wall and are growing there? As the polyp touches the inner walls of colon, doesn't it leave cells behind into the colonic mucosa to grow?

Hi Mike. Yes, it is possible that some dysplastic cells where left behind and could with time morf into cancer cells. I know it is hard just to wait but that is what your mother will need to do for now. Nothing good can come from treating benign cells with chemotherapy and the same is true about further surgery or radiation. Your mother's medical team will just need to keep a close watch on her for any progression of the disease.

You and your mother are in my thoughts and prayers.
