I've received the excisional biopsy results and the report says: Extensive LCIS - multiple foci "focally extending into duct epithelium". Also 3 of 5 core biopsies done at same time on other portion of same breast had the same diagnosis. (All in one breast~the other dx is benign). Any thoughts on what the "focally extending into duct epithelium" means??? Also, the ER/PR receptor studies were performed but not indicated on report with "will not be repeated unless specifically requested". Does that mean that if I ask for it they will provide the results or that they will repeat the test on the tissue? Sorry for so many questions, but I need to make some decisions. It's difficult to know what is right with LCIS when so many reports say "not really cancer"!!

Of course, the surgeon says I've got 3 options: close monitoring, close monitoring w/hormonal therapy or mastectomy. I don't like any of those options!! But, I am thankful that it is caught early and I have choices. I'm sure many of you wish you had my diagnosis. I know that so many of you have been through so much and your input is highly regarded.

Thanks for listening!!

I have no doubt what I would do, but you have to decide what is best for you and what decision you will not have any regrests about.

I don't know why they wouldn't want to find out if you are estrogen/progesterine + or -, because if you're negative, they won't put you anything to kill the hormones that the cancer is feeding on, because yours wouldn't be feedingt on it if it's not positive.

Thanks Muttsmom~

I found out today that the ER/PR results will be coming later. I hope to receive those results before I speak to the Oncologist so that we can discuss what his recommendation would be based on that!

I am leaning toward bilateral mastectomy but there are some issues to consider with that too Sad I keep coming back to the part of the report that says "extensive" and "extending into duct epithelium"....It just sounds like it could be close to invasive ?? And also I've heard so many stories where once all the tissue is taken out, there have been so many additional findings (some scary). I'm afraid of missing what they haven't noticed yet.

Thanks again...I'll keep reading, asking questions etc. and will keep you posted on decisions.

I completely agree with your reasons for leaning toward bi-lateral mastectomies. "Extensive" is exactly why. Right now, they know there's a lot of LCIS, but unless all the breast tissue (Mastectomy(ies) is removed and sent to pathology, there's no way to be 100% sure that there isn't any invasive. Since Lobular is prone to mirror itself in the other breast, that's why I would and did opt to have both removed.......... I went for the most aggressive way to treat, including surgery so hopefully it would be the last time.

Keep us posted.

I had both of my breasts removed. The reason was because I did not want to remove one and then have to worry about what was going on in the other. I had invasive ductal...but I figure that if the cancer had the propensity to form in one breast, then my other breast was just as vulnerable. I think you are making a wise decision with the bilaterals. If you have an interest in reconstruction, look into DIEP. If you have skin-sparing mastectomies, with DIEP reconstruction, it will be like you never lost your breasts...they look very normal. Good luck to you.
