Have just learnt that a friend's husband has liver cancer that he found out about 4 months ago. He has not told his wife as she is studying to become a nurse and this is her final semester.

I feel this is wrong? What do you think?

Also, he tells us that he has stage 1 cancer and he has a life expectancy of 10 yrs.

From all that I have read, it seems less. Is he lying to us so we do not get worried?

We are at a loss as to what to do.

Any frank advice/comment is welcome

Hello Maya,

Thank you for your kind words. Coming back to your situation, I don;t think it is right for your friend's husband to keep his illness from his wife. No doctor can really judge life expectancy once cancer is diagnosed and this patient is depriving his wife of spending any time he has left with her.

He is very blessed to have people in his life who care so much about him that they would rather he told his wife and not you. If the doctor can prescribe any kind of treatment, how can he expect to go through that alone and not have his wife with him. We have first hand experience of how much support family and friends can provide at this very difficult time.

Some of us are stronger than we think and with the help of a higher power your friend and her family will get through this. All you can do is be there for the both of them and their family because they are going to need all the support they can get.

Take care and God bless
Jennel
