I wrote earlier that my latest pap smear results showed:

High grade squamous intraepithelial lesion encompassing: moderate and severe dysplasia, CIN 2 and CIN 3/CIS.

I received a call from the nurse regarding this result, and she told me that I was scheduled for a LEEP this Friday. Period. No consultation with the doctor about the pap results, no explanation about the procedure, nothing.

I am 53 years of age and have had bad paps off and on for the last 10 years. I had a colposcopy four months ago and it showed nothing. Now all of a sudden I have to have a LEEP?

I am scared. The LEEP will be done in the doctor's office and I was told to just take Advil beforehand. I am a mess. I don't tolerate pain well.

Any advice?

Thank you so much. I've learned more from this message board than from my own doctor!

Hi nwill,

Try to take a deep breath...Did you?....I am going to assume you did Smile

A LEEP isn't scary at all. Think of it as a more extensive Colp. Try to not to freak out about it. You doctor basically wants to remove all the abnormal cells once and for all where a colp would not be enough.

They do give you anesthetic but yes, take an advil or midol before you go into the office (to give it time to kick in). If anything, you might feel a slight discomfort.

This is a very common and normal procedure and you doctor will go over the procedure with you on the day of. It isn't something that necessarily requires a separate appointment for explanation. Your doctor will go over everything with you, and if he doesn't, ASK! Sometimes doctors get trapped in their little world and forget to explain things. We are all human after all.

And remember what I said, deep breath.

You'll be fine Very Happy

Thanks Rockstar.

Is it normal to have a colposcopy that is okay and then 4 months later have a Pap with high grade cell changes - CIN II and CINIII/CIS

I wouldn't go as far to say that it is normal, but it is definitely not unusual.

Although this may be a bad example, but I personally had abnormal paps for years with colps preformed each time after a pap with nothing significant to report then the last colp I had showed a big difference in the cells and I was diagnosed with cancer.

So although my case specifically had a drastic change, that is on the rarer side since my cancer was a rare aggressive kind. You should not think that this is in your case.

Hope this helps and remember the deep breathing!

I had my LEEP on Friday. It wasn't nearly as bad as I had imagined it would be. However, when my doctor looked at my cervix, she was not seeing anything unusual. So she did an ECC because she said "those high grade cell changes have to be somewhere!"

Should I be concerned that she had to test further up in the canal?? I don't get my results back for a week to 10 days. The waiting is such a hard thing to have to do!!

Waiting is sometimes the hardest thing is the whole process.

My best suggestion is keep yourself busy and try to keep your mind off of it, as hard as that sounds.

If anything, I would be optomistic if she did not see much during the LEEP. It might be a very very small amount of cells and this may have gotten rid of everything. yay optimism!

Remember, there isn't anything you can do at this point except wait for results, so hey no need stressing about something we don't know if its worth stressing about!
