Does anyone here have Bowen’s disease? I was diagnosed with Bowen’s disease last month. The doctor prescribed me Efudix cream to apply the cream on the patches on my lower left leg every night and told me that it might take 1 to 3 months to get cured. One month is over and I have appointment with the doctor tomorrow but I find no improvement in the patches. They are still red, scaly and itchy. I read that “Efudix is mainly used to treat skin cancers and skin conditions which can develop to cancer”; http://www.drugdelivery.ca/s3472-s-EFUDIX.aspx. I am really very worried. What are the chances that I might develop skin cancer? How long did it take for it to get cured in your case. Please help me…I am feeling so scared and tensed…I don’t know how I will go to the hospital tomorrow!!

Hi Farrah,

I do not know what Bowen's disease is. Have you done a google search for it? How large are the patches?

I know it sounds very scary right now and nothing that I can say will take away your fear. All I can tell you is to keep your doctor's appointment tomorrow. Write in a journal all your questions and ask them to your medical team.

I will keep you in my thoughts and prayers.

Many doctors and authorities regard Bowen's as a form of squamous cell carcinoma; though some regard it as a precancer.

Here is a site that is worth checking out: http://www.bad.org.uk/public/leaflets/bowens.asp

It is always so easy to say "don't worry", but I am going to say it anyhow. Try not to let it sit on your mind. It looks very treatable. I hope your appointment goes well.

After reading the link posted by Vee, I know first-hand what Bowen's disease is because I had it on my face... close to my ear. I recognized the cream used to treat it: 5-fluorouracil. My reddish area was less than .5cm when I showed it to my oncologist during a routine office visit in 1992-1994. He told me the name but I forgot it. I only remembered the name of the cream because I still have it (I know, it is way out of date LOL). He told me not to worry about it, just to use the cream daily and to keep an eye on it. It was gone within 2-3 months... by the time of my next appointment.
