Due to the Decadron med that ate up my right hip and damaged parts of my left hip, I am permanently disabled and have to walk with a cane. However, since my hip replacement in 3-06, I've been doing hip exercises, seeing a physical therapist, and so far my hip has been improving stronger. I still experience pains in both hips/thighs/kneecaps every so often, but I still continue on the hope that I'll be able to walk normal again soon.
But the thing that disturbs me is whenever my mom and I drive to a place like Kaiser, we'll see a normal person park in the handicap spot, get out of their car with no problems, and walk in fine. I've seen it many times where normal people with no issues whatsoever and I feel as if they're abusing the handicap law either just because they're old or lazy. My grandpa for example, is like 84 years old, and he walks miles every day just fine and doesn't even need a cane.
It just bothers me how when my mom takes me to Kaiser, the handicapped spots are always taken, and how some people who aren't even disabled will take advantage of it, which is just plain wrong. |

A well-known international grouse!
Nothing is more irritating than to have a disabled space used by an able-bodied person - we used to be able to get very sticky stickers to slap onto their windshields, saying "Would you like my disablement, too?" - but they seem to have disappeared. At least the wardens do ticket the offenders (those without a badge).
However, there is another problem - there are some conditions which do not manifest themselves obviously, and I'm always a bit hesitant to condemn in case the person is in fact suffering from something like that. We are supposed to have stringent regulations about who gets a badge, though some cases get through that ought not. |

I agree with you totally!! For a year or so before his death, my father needed a walker in order to walk. It always made me mad to see someone perfectly able to walk packed in a handicapped parking spot.
On the other hand, I am glad to hear that you are getting better and may someday not need to use a handicapped parking spot. _________________ Jim

It's also crazy how people will fight over a spot. One time two cars were waiting for a car to leave the handicap spot, and as soon as the person left, one driver immediately sweved right into the spot. People are ruthless!
And...
just a few months ago while at school, my sister called me right after class was over and said "hey can you come out, because this officer wants to see your placard paper." She told me she was putting on some lip gloss in the SUV and the officer walked over asking her if she was disabled. She told him "I'm here to pick up my brother. If you don't believe me, we can go and wait for him." My sister wasn't worried at all, though at first I thought there was something wrong but once I went outside and saw the school patrol officer and my sister standing there. I showed the officer my placard paper and he said “okay, I just wanted to make sure because there's been recent incidences where people have abused the handicap parking.”
And my sister said to the officer, “hey, you’ll remember me right? So whenever next you see me around, you know me okay.” |
