Have any one of you experienced the formation of lots of blood clots after glioblastoma surgery? My husband keeps developing clots, and he even developed a pulmonary infarction! They don't know WHY he is SO susceptible to forming blood clots, and the doctors evidently feel that his situation is highly unusual. Any ideas from any of you? I'd appreciate it! They had to put him on a Heparin drip 11 days after surgery, and we're just praying that he doesn't develop a cranial bleed!

All patients with cancer have an increased risk for blood clot formation. When patients undergo surgery and are immobile (ie lying in bed for several days) they also become at greater risk for blood clots. It sounds as if your husband had a serious complication called a pulmonary embolism. Some people also have a genetic predisposition toward forming blood clots and your medical team could send tests to further evaluate this, inquire at your next meeting with them. Overall your story is not unsual for cancer patients.

Hi,

A GBM buddy of mine had terrible trouble with clotting after his surgery. So much so that his chemotherapy treatment was delayed for almost a year. The poor guy had to take warfarin with daily visits to the hospital to adjust the dose. He got really sick at one stage and had a clot in/behind (I am not sure) his lung and was admitted to hospital which further postponed his treatment. In the end he did get somewhat better, although he is an older man with several other comlplicating medical issues.
