Paraprotein levels - can anybody help me please? What is this ?

My Mum got diagnosed with Multiple Myeloma nearly 8 years ago and has done a number of clinical trials which has helped keep the disease under control.
Unfortunately when she went for her monthly check up last week they told her that her paraprotein levels have now reached 5 (they have been going up 1 a month for the past 5 months) and if she reaches 10 thats when she is in trouble. They want her to go back on steroids but she doesn't want to.
Can anybody tell me about the number count for paraprotein levels and just how bad is a count of 5 please?

I'm not an expert but from all the information I've gathered a 7 or more is considered Stage III and Stage III is the last stage of Myeloma. There is not a Stage IV like other cancers have. So I would say that if she has 5 and is increasing by 1 per month she needs to do something quick.
My husband was diagnosed with Myeloma a year and a half ago and I have done much research on the subject. Hope that helps you.

Thanks for your comments. My Mum is trying to water down what is happening but both Dad and i are in agreement that this is serious and Mum is just trying to protect me and my sister.
