I'm 57 and I was diagnosed with breast cancer this past Wednesday when a very small mass was removed from my right breast. I had a segmented mastectomy, margins proved cancer negative and 3 lymph nodes were biopsied and also proved negative. Right now the final pathology report is not in as to whether it is estrogen receptive, etc.

I will do radiation as soon as the incisions have healed sufficiently. I'm extremely postive and upbeat that this was caught in time and I will have a full recovery.

Questions: Because I am extremely active (I race kayaks), I want to maintain my weight and energy as much as possible during radiation. Any suggestions on diet...we're talking food here, not supplements, please.

Any other advice and suggestions would be appreciated. I know I'll have plenty more questions in the future. Thanks!

The best advice is to build up on vegetables, fruits, pulses, reduce on dairy and red meats. Do not go over the top in anything.

I've found this website helpful - it gives good lists of foods and information on their values:

Hope all goes well and that you are soon back to racing your kayak/

Just maintain your regular eating habits, with maybe a little more protein. I know you said no supplements, but a daily mega vitamin, along with your normal eating habits would help. Rads do not cause everyone fatigue, so you *may* not have an issue with it. That is my wish for you.

I did not have one day of fatigue, out of 33 treatments. I was having to have blood tests once per week and I was just sick and tired of them...following chemo and all of those tests. I asked my rad onc if I could stop with the blood tests. He told me to have one more and he would decide. I had the test and he looked at the report and told me he had never seen any patients blood work look so good after finishing chemo. I didn't have to have another blood test. I ate normally and took a daily vitamin.

You sound very strong and that is good. It truly makes a lot of difference. I wish you the best in all of this. Take care, sweetie.[/i]
