Hi! My mom was diagnosed with stage 4 colon cancer about 3 years ago. When we first found out, we were told that there was only a 20% chance of being cured. So a little history- Dec. 2004 she was diagnosed with colon cancer and had surgery to remove it. She went through six months of chemo. Exactly one year later, in Dec 2005, it came back to her ovaries so she had a hysterectomy and then went on chemo for another six months. Then about a year and 4 months later it had spread to her lung and again she had surgery but she didn't go through chemo. Then she had a scan about 2 months later and everything looked fine but 2 months later, after the scan, it had already spread to her stomach lining. We're probably at the last 1 or 2 treatments left available. I guess my question is this- Has anyone been through this similar situation that could tell me maybe what to expect? When she's at the end, what will she be doing? Will she just be out of it?

THanks![/list]

Hi, Becca. I don’t have any answers for you. I am responding to your story. How terrible!! She has been through so much! She will probably have to go on morphine at some point and the morphine will make her sleep more and more until she eventually dies. However, I do not know this for a fact. I will keep you and your mother in my thoughts and prayers.

Hi Becca!

Our family had something similar too. My had mum also first colonial cancer which later proceeded by forming 7 metastases to the liver. When she was first diagnosted with the cancer we had 20-30% changes to stay alive next 2years. She went through the basic chemo but unfortunately it helped only for couple months. After that we had a change to carry on with another, but my mum said no. She decided rather to enjoy her last half a year given time rather than go to the chemo twice a week.

The summer 2005 she managed pretty well with opiats derivates taken oraly. After the cancer proceeded more and more she had a sort of "pump" with her which injectited the med every 15mins. Adding to these she also had some pills oraly, the problem just was that they normally didn't stay in that long.

September 2005 she was hospitaliced while they had better methods to take care of her. First she stayed in cancer ward but was transfered to hospice. She was in good sense until about 3weeks before her death. When the function of the liver is to clear all the harming stuff out of the body they all started to go around and she definetly wasn't her normal self. Of course when you are threated with such a medicine for such a period and amounts it will also "show". The week before her death she didn't talk pretty much at all. But that was also said from the hospice that it's usually that the person "turns to her/hisself" and that they had such a expirience with lot of the dying patients.

That was just something I put up pretty quickly, but if you have some further question or just interested to send an email than could you add your email to this forum

All the best!
