Hi, my mom, who is 53 years old on a routine colonoscopy in August of 2004, was diagnosed with "suspicious" colon polyps. Her doctor took her into surgery, which turned out to be a colon resection of 20 plus inches, on September 6, 2005. The diagnoses turned out to be stage one colon cancer, in which the docs and pathology reports said that she was clear from any kind of cancer, and would NOT require any chemotherapy. She had not lived a day without pain, and in January 2006 (in which the pathologist had refused to acknowledge) was back in surgery for a neuroma abcess at the incision site. Still no relief...... Febuary 2006, she had a repeat ct scan of the abdomen, and bloodwork done. Everything came back clear and normal. A new pain had appeared in mid July 2006, and she contacted her surgeon's office, and they ordered another ct scan. The results......reoccurance of a "hardball" sized cancerous tumor in the colon, with mets to the left lobe of the liver (4.2 cm). Her CEA bloodwork that day was 34. She was admitted to the hospital where she underwent another colon resection. That was July 27. She left the hospital on August 3 with a CEA level of 20. We scheduled an appointment at the Hillman Center in Shadyside the following Thursday. We got a plan put together by their specialist. We then saw a medical oncologist that Friday, who agreed with the specialist, that she would start chemotherapy for 3 months, then have a liver resection in December, and then continue chemo for about 6 months. At that point, we learned that this was identified as stage four colon cancer. The doc ordered a ct scan of the brain for precautions, and more bloodwork. That was this past Monday. The ct of the brain came back perfect, however, now her CEA level is 114. I do understand that smoking can elevate this reading, but that much??? Oh, and I forgot to mention that on Monday, the hospital somehow "lost" her bloodwork!!!! I am so confused, and really beside myself in this whole thing!! How can stage one colon cancer go to stage four in 10 months??? Any insight on this matter would be greatly appreciated!!!
Thanks,
