My mother has recently undergone a CT abdomen with IV contrast. She will have an MRI done next Monday. Her findings are as followed:

Female, 56 years old, CT ab with IV contrast: 3/19/2006

Bibasilar atelectasis is present.

The liver is generally decreased in attenuation, compatible with fatty infiltration. At the junction of Segments II and III is a 0.7 cm round mass which is immediately subcapsular and results in a focal convexity. It uniformly enhances on arterial and portal venous phase and remains uniformly enhanced on delayed phase images. No other lesions are noted within the liver.

Also... a subcentimeter low density left renal focus is too small to fully characterize but probably represents a cyst, there is no lymphadenopathy or ascites.

Degenerative change in the spine are present.

Impression: Fatty liver with an enhancing nodule which appears to cause a focal convexity of the liver capsule. It is concerning for a neoplasm, particularly if this patient has a history of hepatitis B. Correlation with histology is recommended...

If anyone has any idea how this should be approached, please give me a reply. I understand how poor the prognosis of liver cancer is. My mother, to my knowledge has no history of hepatitis B. Can someone please give me a run down of this report? I am having a hard time putting all of these findings together, such as bibasilar atelectasis and the "cyst" in her left kidney. Any help would be appreciated grandly. Is there any chance that this "enhancing nodule" is a focal nodular hyperplasia?

Thank you in advance.
