Hi,
I just have a question out there. I was diagnosed with colon cancer in October and have had surgery since . I start chemo tommorow. I was always told for years that cancer is heredity. Someone on either side of the family
has to have cancer in some point in there life.
No one on either side of my family has ever had cancer. Has anyone ever heard of having caqncer with no family history?
There is heart disease, diabetes, high cholesterol etc. but not cancer.
Any ideas? Thanks much

Hello

Cancer may be hereditary in some cases, but really is an isolated event in the majority of cases. What you heard is wrong. Your first-degree relatives are at a higher risk of developing colon cancer because you have developed it, but that doesn't necessarily mean that they will have it at one point.

best regards,
Dr Leo
