Hi,
My name is Sumner and I am 35 years old. This is the story of my experience with cervical cancer.
In or about November of 2008 I noticed bleeding after intercourse. The bleeding was not very significant so I did not worry about it. Each time after sex for awhile, I bled and the severity was getting worse. Then for some reason the bleeding stopped. I put the issue out of my mind. In late April 2009 or early May the bleeding returned. Then after my period in May, the bleeding continued for about 10 days straight. Finally, I decided to visit the GYN.
Luckily, the GYN was able to do an ultrasound and a PAP test that day. She called with the results about a week later and sent me to a GYN/Oncologist. The visit was more eventful than I fully realized. The doctor looked at me with the scope and saw precancerous cells but decided to do a biopsy because my bleeding was not normal. The biopsy was a little uncomfortable but nothing some deep breathing would not help with. The bleeding associated with the biopsy was extremely heavy and took nearly 45 minutes to control. I was advised to stay home from work and he would call me in 48 hours with the results. Two days later, I am in his office where he states he was suprised I did not end up in the emergency room with a hemorrage after the biopsy. That really floored me. Then he says we should do a cone biopsy to find out what was really going on.
The cone biopsy seemed very scary but ended up being pretty easy. I did however have severe bleeding and had to spend the night in the hospital. This is usually a 30-45 minute procedure and then you go home. I was sore for a day or 2 but did not feel pain other than a little cramping. I also had a CT scan which was also very easy other than the stuff you have to drink before the scan.
So, after all this the doc tells me I have Stage 1 Cervical Cancer and need to have a radical hysterectomy and quickly as there is concern of hemmorage. Three days later I have a radical hysterectomy and I spend 3 days in the hospital. This was major surgery let no one fool you. I also had a suprapubic catheter until this past week. It has taken a lot of time and support from my wonderful husband and family to get through this. I am 5 weeks out from surgery and just now getting back to myself and work. In August, I will undergo 4 weeks of radiation and chemo.
My advice is to ask all the questions you need and take someone with you to the appointments. It is amazing what you absorb vs what the other person absorbs. Rest, Rest, and Rest. I am pertty good at lounging but it's hard when the mind wants to go and the body can't. Resting will help you heal faster. Pray, have a good support system, and keep a positive attitude. You Will Beat This!

ecupir8fan,

Thank you so much for sharing your story with us. WOW, you've been through a lot and you sound so positive. I had stage 4 going to 5, i was lucky enough to only have a cone biopsy...???? I was booked in for hysterectomy, but at last minute they decided to give me the best odds. and i was lucky that results came back great after the opp.

I am only now having issues again, and pregnant too.

Thank you again for you support to others going through the same thing. welcome and hope to see you more on this thread.
