I am a 38 year old female and I am a smoker which is why I am very concerned about symptoms I have been having. For about two weeks, I have had a sore throat, hurts to swallow, voice gets hoarse..nothing that concerned me too much, especially since it is allergy season and the weather is changing. Then one morning last week, I woke up with swollen peeling lips. I attributed this to the weather as well, even though I have never had this problem in the past. They have not healed despite my best efforts. Now two days ago, a sore about the size of dime appeared on the inside of my cheek...and it HURTS! I thought I was actually having tooth problems because I cannot chew and the entire side of my face aches unbelievably, and the pain goes into my ear. I discovered the pain was coming from whatever this thing is. I did some research and read that canker sores are extremely painful, but this does not look like the images they show and I have never had mouth problems before! I don't want to overreact and go running to the doctor for some "chapped" lips and a mouth sore, but I have seen that both of these symptoms and the sore throat are often signs of oral cancer. I have been smoking for 24 years, so I guess that wouldn't be too far fetched...

Any insight from someone who has dealt with this would be appreciated! Thanks!

Sharon, I am very sorry about your health concerns. I wish the part of the forum were more active because I have no experience with oral cancers. It does sound like it is at least worth a visit to your GP to find out for sure what it is. If it is not cancer, then that will be helpful information in the future if it happens again.

Do keep us informed... even if it is not cancer. You are in my thoughts and prayers.

Hi Sharon,

I think it'd be best to go to your doctor. I wouldn't take a chance on something like this, because difficulty swallowing (dysphagia), Hoarseness, and pain in your throat, in your midchest or between your shoulder blades are all possible symptoms of esophageal cancer (note: it could be other stuff, but since this is a cancer forum and cancer is probably the thing you're most worried about at this point I just thought I'd point this out to you).
