Hi Sherri, I know how you feel. I am around your age (42) and just quit smoking on January 1, and I quit for just the reason that you mentioned in your post. I would feel totally sick and ashamed of myself when I would leave my mother, who has severe COPD, and light up a cigarette!! And I always hated trying to disguise the smell of smoke when I was going to visit her. I can only imagine what she was thinking when I would come in the house smelling like an ashtray, and there she was having a hard time catching her breath.

Mom quit smoking in 1988 when she was 45 y/o, was diagnosed with emphysema in 1990, and then lung cancer on January 31. 2006. Let me tell you, when she was diagnosed with lung cancer, I was so relieved that I had quit smoking on January 1 because I can't even imagine how much I would hate myself if I was still smoking while she was battling for her life.

I am sure I have damaged my lungs from smoking for about 25 years, and I have also thought "why quit now" but I also know that if I quit now, I will decrease my chances getting lung cancer, and improve my overall quality of life and my health. My mom quit and still suffered from COPD and now lung cancer, but had she not quit when she did, she probably would have died years ago. By quitting - she has given our family a chance to have more time with her - to love her - to make more memories, to see grandkids born, etc.

I have quit before only to go back and I know there are no assurances that I will remain quit forever so I take it day by day...

What helped to me quit was this very eye-opening quit smoking site: www.whyquit.com.

Good luck....you can DO IT!
