My husband has Stage IIIA primary liver cancer..with no indication of spread. We have been told he is no longer a candidate for a transplant. Being that this is hard to accept, we are exploring alternatives.
Since there are not mets, a transplant in our eyes is possible.

Does anyone know of someone that has gone abroad for a transplant??

Does anyone have some ideas how to aquire this kind of information??

Any information would help!!
Thank you very much

Well after being in Shanghai for 2 weeks. I am proud to say my husband was able to do what American doctors told him he couldn't. He has had a successful liver transplant.

With still no sign of spread, prior to the transplant. We will return to the states in about 3 weeks, and my husband will undergo preventative Chemo.

I am glad that neither my husband nor myself were narrow minded, to the point of dismissing all possible options. I now have a husband still with me, whom I love dearly. My 5 year old son and my 3 year old daughter still have a father's lap to sit in.

Americans are clueless when is comes other coutries' capabilities. Either that, or we choose to be ignorant, and would rather believe that the US is only the best. Well we are all quite mistaken. Everyday life here is very simple here in China, an in many ways they are more advance than us.

If there is one thing that I have realized. Is that the medical in the states, spends more time consulting each other on treatments than, treating the patient.

I hope this helps those people that have been told, your tumor is to large and we have to yank you off the transplant list. That is not the end. It never is. Doctors can not take away your life. You make that decision!!

The criteria for a transplant whether set by UNOS or by the various Transplant Centers accross the states. Is not set to be favorable or designed for Cancer infected patients. So if you think for one minute that the odds of being successful in waiting for a cadavor organ, think again.

My husband was in the race against time due to his cancer. We reallized that cancer has a head start in this race. So rather than continuing down the same path, where cancer was so far in front it was not in sight. We were able to find a shortcut, on our own. So at least now, we are leading the race!!

If anyone would like information or has questions. I would be happy to share our journey with you

My father too was told that he is off of the transplant list due to a tumor. How do you find out about the abroad transplants? Does insurance pay for those?

This is my first time even looking at a blog. I never thought that I would be participating on one. I sure appreciate seeing stories that I can relate to. September '05 I married Mr.Wonderful. In July my new husband was diagnossed with liver cancer. Fast forward to now (4/13/07). We just got on the UNOS list. His MELD is 8. We are working with UCLA and trying again, to get an exception. First one was denied. 3 or 4 tumors largest was 5.4 cm. After 3 TACE's The largest is now 4.2cm. I am anxious to hear about your experience in China. I don't want to wait until it metasticizes or gets too large for a transplant. Please help. I feel so inadequit to be researching the options for my husbands liver.

A friend of mine recently got his liver transplanted from this hospital in Singapore. My mom's a HCC patient, and she's also getting treatment from the same hospital. They're really far more experienced than any doctors you might find in the US. The main Doctor, Dr. K C Tan has done almost 550+ liver transplants so far. However, these people do not do Cadaveric transplant, they do Live Donor Liver transplant. You might consider approaching them if you have a donor in your family who has the same bloodgroup as your husband's.

Do you have any more personal experience that you can share on this hospital that you link to? Does insurance cover costs there? Would an English only speaking person from the United states have a hard time communicating there? Any additional info would be appreciated!!

Thanks!

Keizer bro, how would you like me to further elaborate on these guys? I don't think insurance would cover treatment abroad, but personally i do know that the costs over there are far lower than what you're charged by your local hospitals unless you're fully covered.

And yes, ofcourse these guys can speak english very well. The main transplant hepatologist & Gastroenterologist has done his specialisation from some institute in the US.
