I spoke to my dad's wife today and she told me he has lost something like 14-16 lbs since he last saw the doc. That was about a week or so ago. He does eat but very small amounts at a time. Is this rapid weight loss common? Does it happen near the end? I was thinkin it might be water weight or something, or maybe the scale was off. Perhaps I'm just dreaming of excuses as to why this can't be real. I would like to hear of some other experiences regarding weight loss and how it occured, please. He was losing weight right before he was diagnosed without trying and also lost some during chemo which he has decided to stop-for now. His weight was somewhat steady around 170. Today it was in the low 150 range. He is 5'9" and has a pretty large frame. Any thoughts on this would be appreciated.

Hi Marcosis,
Only his doctor can tell you for sure what is happening with your father. However, weight loss is one of the traditional signs of cancer. I would recommend that he see his doctor. It might be helpful if he began to drink a fortified milkshake. There are several brands in different flavors. Ask his doctor about an ultra strong vitamin prescription. That also may help.

Jim,
Thankx for your replies. I know his wife has been making him some protein shakes and they are in contact with his doc. I am going to CT. to see him in a few weeks. It will have been about 5-6 weeks since I have seen him ( I live in MI), so I'm sure I will have a better idea of his overall condition when I get there. Thanks again.

You should call and speak to the doctor and ask about the weight loss. My Dad has NSCLC stage IV, was diagnosed July 04, and has been the same weight since.
