My mother in law has lung cancer. She was diagnosed in June. Our problem is she won't tell us hardly anything. She is practically in the hospital every other week. A couple weeks ago, it took her 4 hours to get home when it should only take 1/2 hour. She told us that she didn't know where she was. When she got home she couldn't remember her 4 grandchildren and didn't know she had even left the house. On Saturday night we get a call saying she put her car in the ditch. She didn't know where she was or how she got there. But, the cops let her drive home. We live an hour away and we were going to go get the car so she can't drive but she needs a way to get to chemo. My husbands 2 sisters and brother don't think its any big deal. But, what if next time she crosses the center line instead of going into a ditch, what if next time she kills someone. Does anyone have any advice? Is this memory loss normal? Any advice would be appreciated

Thanks a bunch

Sorry that you are going through this. We had the same problems with my mom except that we found out that in addition to the lung cancer (stage IV), she was also in the early stages of Alzheimer's Disease. As her physical condition deteriorated, her mental confusion became more pronounced. It could be lots of other things too. If she is getting dehydrated because she's not eating and drinking properly, that could be the problem. She could also have brain mets, which might be the cause. I think someone needs to talk to her doctor to find out what s going on and relay your observations to him/her.

Thank you for your reply. I've been telling my husband that he needs to call the doctor to set up an appointment with her. I think they need to find out what is going on. According to her live in boyfriend, the doctor told her she needs to have her affairs in order. But, when you ask her about it, she won't tell you anything, she just cries. My sister in law says her toenails are black and something about if it doesn't get better they are going to remove them. And then her legs are so swollen they said if they don't get better they are sending her somewhere else. My husband has to go this weekend to sign power of attorney papers for her. We'll try to get something straight then... Thanks alot
