I was reading an article on the newest testing for ways to treat GBM and thought those afflicted with this dreaded cancer might find hope that there could be an effective treatment on the horizon.

Paul Mischel of the University of California at Los Angeles and his colleagues reported in the New England Journal of Medicine that they have developed a test for brain tumor tissue that predicts which patients will be sensitive to chemotherapy drugs that block a key protein called EGFR in the cancer cells of glioblastomas. Mischel said this will help prevent patients from having therapies that are much more toxic and less beneficial.

It's the latest in a series of papers relating gene mutations or changes in gene expression with response to the EGFR tyrosine kinase inhibitors Gefitinib (Iressa) and Erlotinib (Tarceva). What's interesting is that, in every paper, something different correlates.

A test of brain tissue can detect whether patients are good candidates for the treatments, which can help them to live nearly a year longer than they would without the treatment. However, the test can also spare those for whom the toxic treatments would only intensify suffering.
