Hi all. I am the concerned cousin of a three year old little girl who has been having low white cell counts week after week. As the mother of a baby boy with Down Syndrome, I know how wonderful and informative online forums can be and I was hoping for a little insight.

My cousin, who as I said is three, was in for a routine checkup when it was discovered through a finger prick that her white cell count was at 3300. She went to a major hospital in Atlanta, GA for further testing, all in all only lasting for a couple of hours, and they sent them home with instructions to have her blood drawn for check every week. It has consistently gone down and is now at 2200. They did perform some sort of culture and ruled out luekemia (sp), although, I always thought a bone marrow test was required for that. But at this point, they have no idea what is causing this. She seems perfectly healthy, otherwise, with no apparent illness, other than mouth sores that are very frequent.

Needless to say, we are all very concerned and I was hoping to hear from anyone who may have info. Of course I am not looking for a diagnosis, just something to go by that possibly my aunt could ask the docs about. maybe something that they have failed to consider.

Thank you so much for your time in reading!

Hello

Although I take care of adults only, there are several causes for low white counts, leukemia being one of them. Other infections, viral or bacterial could also cause this. But she is getting the evaluation she needs, and I think doctors might be hesitant to jump to a bone marrow biospy, and are looking if this recovers or not.

best regards,
Leo
