Hi, my first post. We are caring for a 73 year old friend who was diagnosed with stage 4 NSC lung cancer. Diagnosed after problems with breathing. She wants no treatment. She had 3 mini strokes one night and was hospitalized, the doc said 1 month. While in the hospital her voice got better, she is able to feed herself now. She had a chest tube put in and the fluid removed from the lungs and then the chest tube was taken out after the procedure to like caurterize the lungs. Her coughing seemed to go away. We have noticed the last view days she is coughing again and bringing up a yellow/red (blood) fleem. Is what she is coughing up a bad sign? We were told the cancer had spread also to major organs but the doc didn't say exactly which ones. The mass was in her left lung. We have also noticed her stomach has swelling, the doc said all part of the cancer. Does this swelling sound like the liver? We are trying to know what to expect next, but can't seem to get too many answers. She is coming up on the 1 month the doctor had given her, but that was 2 days after the strokes and she has made some improvement with the damage the strokes caused. Any help, answers, advice or opinions are welcome. Thanks so much for taking the time to read this. Carol

so sorry for your sad time...unfortunatley I don't have much info but a few questions...apparanatly this patient is at home...does she live alone? does she have Hospice care? Her primary care doctor (usually the oncologist) should be available at ALL times to HONESTLY answer all your questions and concerns.
I've learned that nobody can predict a timeline (since our family was called to come immediately because Dad wasn't expected to make it thru the night) That was 3 weeks ago
The MOST important thing is to see that she is comfortable and pain is controlled.
Wish I knew of a miracle! It really bothers me that nobody is giving you clear, honest answers, advice and direction Please let me know how you make out

My 62 year old dad was diagnosed with stage iv NSCLC spread to brain, bones and blood. He received radiation to shring tumors around his spine for palliative reasons. He denied chemo because it would only afford him about one month more survival. There's alot to tell, I especially understand your frustration with getting no real good answers or direction. Three weeks later I noticed what I thought looked like his liver swelling. I am only passing on what I observed, however, my dad passed away two days later in his sleep.
