I have been battling problems with my thyroid for 5yrs now. I had all the tests including the biopsy about 5yrs ago. I have been trying to find out what has been wrong with my thyroid but nobody knew. Then about 2 months ago they started the test all over again and (with a different doctor) they found cancer. They just told me on friday that I would have to have the whole thing removed. I am only 33yrs old and a single mother of 3 so I am really scared about the surgery. Is that very normal? Also I was wondering if you have thyroid cancer if your B12 levels are high is that normal. Is is also normal to be scared and to have second thoughts about the surgery. Crying or Very sad

Hi smcasillas3. I am truly sorry about your cancer. While I do not have thyroid cancer, I have had thyroid problems for a number of years. I would be no different if my thyroid was cut out because it barely functions now.

I am not sure if the high B12 is due to the cancer or not. Some cancers to have an effect on the B12 level.

Do you have the surgery scheduled already?

Hi smacasillas3

It is very normal to be afraid, and to have second thoughts. It's shattering for any person to learn they have cancer and your world turns upside down in a split second. But fight it with your all--even if that requires surgery. From what I read, thyroid cancer can be one of the more treatable cancers. All surgeries impose risks, no matter what kind. I too am experiencing thyroid problems, and had a fine needle biopsy this summer which revealed no cancer. The doctor suggested a 5 to 10% probability of the mass in my throat could be cancer, and asked if I wanted surgery. I declined, and decided to go through follow up testing. But I guarantee you, I would do the surgery if cancer was found and the condition necessitates it. You will be in my thoughts and prayers.

Rhonda

hi
you are scared about the surgey, i did too before my surgery.
I did have a tyroidectomie a month ago, with another surgey in the thorax in the same time, when i woke up from the surgery i was feeling pain only in my thorax but not in my neck, like if they never touch it. you have to know you gonna have strong pain killer(maybe morphine) so you will not feel pain at all, and sure you will have a drain that you will not feel at all even when they remove it days later, believe me.
another things if i have to peek a cancer, i will pick the thyroid cancer, because is a slow cancer and easy to treat most of the tyroid cancer. ask your doctor, he will tell you the same.
if you have any question i am here for you, god bless you.
