We are presently in the midst of battles between 2 doctors giving conflicting info about my Dad's recurrent colon cancer.
The surgeon told my Mom 16 days ago to call all the family members home
The oncologist said we should take him home with Hospice care and refuses to give any more treatments.
My Dad is laying in a hospital bed, in semi-coma, occaisionally muttering "I want to be home"
Have met with Hospice who are ready to come.
TODAY the surgeon says..There's always chance he could get stronger to start chemo and radiation ..I don't think it will happen...but let's send him to nursing home or home with VNA 2 hours a week"
WHAT!?!?
My Mom (frail 76 y/o) is so confused. (She of course has ultimate say)
We (6 children) feel surgeon's duties are over and want to honor Dad's wishes to be home. We are scared to death Dad will die (he's already been taken off all IV's) before we get him home.
Anybody have similar story or advice?
Appreciate any quick reply as time is short

not sure what the answer is but who has control of his health care proxy? I would assume that person can make the ultimate decision if you can get his dr. to prescrible hospice. I agree-why torture him with chemo if his chances are bleek. Might as well make his final time comfortable. I will pray for you and your family during this difficult time.

thanks so much for replying..happy to report Dad was brought home today with hospice care. Someone at hospital (God bless them) intervened and let oncologist(primary care doctor) know what the surgeon was doing. Oncol. assigned Hospice and signed discharge papers!! (surgeon is" in hiding")
ADVICE: after many hours of calls and discussions, discovered
NO doctor has ANY say about your final wishes. Don't let them yank you around
My biggest fear was that by the time we got Dad home he wouldn't even be aware. Semi comatose as he was...smile and thumbs up convinced me we had fullfilled his wishes.

PS Hospice is WONDERFUL!
