Hi Linda! I am glad you mentioned the change in diet. Many do not realize that nutrition is playing major factor in healing. I do believe and practice healty nutrition with vitamins, minerals, tea's and herbs for many years now so I hope that my body will have the resistance to fight this "evil"!

I believe the main criteria are to get educated and choose the best surgeon possible, regardless of the amount of travel required. Talk to everyone you can, but only you and your doctor can make the final decision. You only have one shot-make it the best!

I had an excellent ROBOTIC experience with Dr. Menon at the Henry Ford Hospital http://henryford.com/body.cfm?id=41144&oTopID=41144 in Detroit, Michigan (My wife?s diary and my detailed experience are posted elsewhere). He has performed over 1200 robotic procedures and has never converted to ?open? surgery. The high magnification and smaller instruments allow for more precise surgery. My surgery lasted 2 hours and I was dry the minute the catheter was removed 7 days later. I only lost 100 cc of blood and required no transfusion.

Also, the book Patrick Walsh's "Guide to Surviving Prostate Cancer" is an excellent resource and I highly recommend it.

Wishing you the best, with prayers,
Bill in Ohio

In http://homepage.mac.com/penagoscorzo/cancer/prostate_treatment/prostate_treatment.html I found this:

Surgery is a common treatment for early stage prostate cancer. The doctor may remove all of the prostate or only part of it. In some cases, the doctor can use a new technique known as nerve-sparing surgery. This type of surgery may save the nerves that control erection. However, men with large tumors or tumors that are very close to the nerves may not be able to have this surgery.

If the pathologist finds cancer cells in the lymph nodes, it is likely that the disease has spread to other parts of the body. Sometimes, the doctor removes the lymph nodes before doing a prostatectomy. If the prostate cancer has not spread to the lymph nodes, the doctor then removes the prostate. But if cancer has spread to the nodes, the doctor usually does not remove the prostate, but may suggest other treatment.
