On Thursday, August 13th I noticed a hard lump on the right side of my neck near my shoulder blade. After searching around the rest of my neck I found another lump on the left side. The one on the left grew over the next few days and both are very firm, painless, and both seem attached to the lower tissue, I don’t seem to be able to move them. The outside of my skin looks normal with no redness or swelling.

A few days prior to finding the lumps, I complained to my wife that I was scratching my legs off they were so itchy. Aside from that, I have had no other symptoms like loss of appetite, weight loss, difficulty breathing etc. Actually, on Friday the 14th we had a company softball game and I had no trouble running or any other activities. That night while we were drinking and partying, I experienced no discomfort.

I am adopted so my knowledge of my family health history is limited, however my birth mother died of colon cancer many years before I met any of my birth family.

On Monday August 17th, I had an appointment with my doctor who examined the lumps; he confirmed that my lymph nodes are swollen.

He asked if I had been sick or inured lately, I had not. He also asked if they get smaller, then bigger - they have only gotten bigger since they first appeared.

He then told me he was concerned based on the information I've gave him and the fact that they were hard and I was not experiencing any tenderness.

He sent me for a CBC & diff blood test and a chest x-ray. I took the rest of the morning off work and went to the hospital to get both of them done. A rush was put on the results so I should hear within the next 10 days.

In addition to the tests, I was referred to an ENT (Ears, Nose, and Throat) Specialist to get his opinion of my lymph nodes. The doctor’s office called today (Wednesday August 19th) with my appointment for Monday September 14th.

I am a 30 year old male, generally healthy and I don’t live a sedentary lifestyle.

That’s pretty much where things are today - I will keep you updated as things progress. Any words of advice would be most appreciated.

Hi Derf95

Sorry to hear of your hassles. It s no fun I know but it is important not to panic. At this point your symptoms could be lots of things and most of them are not cancer so take heart. if it is NHL or HL they can be treated so even more reason not to panic. You have a while to go before you get some answers, try to relax and do things to take your mind off your health issues, and stay away from the internet trying to self diagnose as this will drive you bonkers.

Good luck and remember we are always here to help if you need us in the future.
