The "sprained ankle" that I thought I got from jogging is still with me, and my foot, ankle, and calf are all red and puffy. I'm thinking I've got me a case of DVT.
Sent a mail with picture off to my onc, will see if he wants to see me before my scheduled July meeting. _________________ Age 37 (36 at diagnosis)

Hi Joepet
I hope it not DVT, and you really did sprain that ankle. Good luck with the doc. _________________ Age 52

Well, it wasn't a sprained ankle, but it's apparently not DVT either. Hopefully a week's worth of antibiotics will knock out whatever it is. _________________ Age 37 (36 at diagnosis)

Hi joepet
Hmmm strange you have post chemo issues with your feet. I had problems with my toenails, they went a horrible color and texture and dropped off. While these two things may appear unrelated perhaps just perhaps R CHOP leaves one vulnerable to fungal infections in the foot. Just a thought.
Hope it gets better soon Joe

Swelling has decreased about 80% after four days of Augmentin, so I think this is doing the trick. Vascular specialist also confirmed no vein problems.
One more month until my regular scheduled followup with the onc. _________________ Age 37 (36 at diagnosis)

Perhaps the decrease in swelling had more to do with relaxing on the weekend as opposed to the drug itself. In any event, I still have pain in the vein from just below my knee to around my ankle, and a good deal of swelling takes place in the course of a business day, despite attempts to get up and walk around as much as possible. More disconcerning are the fevers that come and go from time to time...last night I was up to 38.4, but a good night's sleep brought it down to 36.8. Still, I'm taking the day off of work at my wife's insistance.
I've already been to three doctors who's only help was determining that I do not have a broken bone or DVT, so I'm suffering from a bit of doctor fatigue as well. Perhaps I'll just wait until next month's onc appointment to pursue this further.
Come to think of it, I'm also experiencing some of the same vein pain in my arms as I usually felt during the second week of my cycles. Can anyone think of any other possibilities for these symptoms? _________________ Age 37 (36 at diagnosis)

Perhaps the fourth time is the charm...since I was taking a day off for being sick, I figured I had to justify it, so I went to the local clinic near my home. This doc took one look and said "this is an infection", and even found the source of the infection in a cut in the webbing between my fourth and fifth toes.
This time I'm taking Cravit. Hope it does the trick! _________________ Age 37 (36 at diagnosis)

Well, Cravit hasn't worked either, so I went to see my onc today. He too concurred that it certainly looked like an infection, but given that neither Augmentin now Cravit worked, one would have to consider other non-infectuous causes as possibilities as well, though he had no definite ideas on what that might be, though he's pretty sure it has nothing to do with a relapse, as all of my nodes seemed normal.
Received yet another antibiotic and an anti-inflammatory drug as a means of controlling the symptoms, but I think I might try taking just the anti-inflammatory drug, as I don't really want my body to get used to every antibiotic known to man.
Even though there's constant swelling, the leg pain is only about a 3 on a 1 to 10 scale. More trying are the fevers and malaise that come and go (had a 38.2 last night, but feel fine today). Maybe I'll just have to accept that my body won't be "right" for a good long while. _________________ Age 37 (36 at diagnosis)

Hi joepet
Sorry to hear this is lingering on...... Chin up hey, it wont be too long before your immune system can handle the bugs. The fungal infection I got in my toes took about 3 months to clear, hopefully you can get rid of this before then.
Good luck I hope it clears soon _________________ Age 52

Finished five days in the hospital clearing up what was explained to me as a stubborn leg infection. But I think that that was just a symptom, and not the ultimate cause of the poor circulation in my left leg. I'm not even sure it was actually an infection; why wouldn't any of the oral antibiotics have helped at all? I got a 39C fever in the middle of taking the last one! The fact that I laid down with my leg up in the air for days probably had more to do with getting it back to normal size than the IV antibiotics did.
I'm pretty sure there's some long term damage to the veins that I will just have to deal with. But I've given up on doctors for now, since they all seem to say nothing other than "oh, that's an infection!" Will just try exercising, resting, and eating well to the best of my ability. _________________ Age 37 (36 at diagnosis)

A week after my hospitalization, I am feeling awesome! Swelling is now minimal even after a full day at work. Better still, the tiredness and lethargy I have felt these past few months have gone. Before I could barely make it through a work day even with nine or ten hours sleep; now I'm perky all day with around seven. I haven't felt this well since before I started noticing my original lymphoma symptoms about a year ago. So maybe what all of the doctors insisted on telling me was true, and it was all "just the infection"?
If that's the case, I'm glad to be proven wrong! _________________ Age 37 (36 at diagnosis)

Finally got the house guests out of the house, so I have some time on the computer once more. Time for an update I guess.
Almost four weeks back I woke up and thought "Oh Shit!" That's because what came out of me wasn't shit, but a little bit of blood. Naturally I forget Rule #1 and panicked, but fortunately was able to be alone before breaking down. After recovering from that I did the rational thing and called my onc, and made an appointment for the next day. He didn't notice anything wrong with me, so he passed me off to the proctology department to determine if I should get a colonoscopy. I went to that the next day, and by then the doctor could detect no bleeding, but did find a hemorrhoid, which he said would offer a "plausible explanation" for what happened. Of course, the presence of a hemorrhoid is not absolute proof of the absence of a tumor, and the only way to determine that is with a colonscopy.
In the end, we decided not to go through with the procedure right now. Though the overall feelings of a hemorrhoid and my lymphoma tumor were quite similar, there were three symptoms that were unique to the tumor, those being (in chronological order):
1. Bleeding that increases in frequency and quantity.
2. A lump that I could feel when pushing the skin between my anus and spine (I would do this to help "push" my stools out)
3. Stools that are flat on one side (looking almost like a hemisphere)
I guess as long as I don't have any of those symptoms, I will continue "watch and hope" strategy. I still haven't told anyone else about this yet, and probably won't mention it at least until my regularly scheduled followup next month. I also have a annual physical coming up that includes a "fecal occult" test that should tell if there is any small amount of blood in the stools. So I guess it will eventually become clear to me if I need to followup.
More pressing right now is my tooth. I went to the dentist this morning and he says I have a pretty big cavity. Might need a root canal. Dentists in Japan don't like to do things all at once (probably because they get more insurance money stretching out the procedure over time?), so I have three or four Saturdays of pain awaiting me. Bummer.
And my hair is pretty freaky. I used to have a big colic that concerned me, but now my hair is all one big colic! Wavy and curly and completely uncontrollable. Haven't decided whether I should get a buzz cut or let it grow down to my shoulders... _________________ Age 37 (36 at diagnosis)
