Can anyone give advice on the stomach not working after a stage 4 cancer ?
My Mom was diagnosed with a rare stage 4 Neuroendoctrine stomach tumor about 8 weeks ago. She had no symptoms other than a pain in her side that she thought she had pulled a muscle. She was fine and working in her woodshop the day she went into the hospital but since then things have gone downhill it seems. She has been in the hospital for 30 days straight now because they can't seem to get her stomach working right. She has had 2 chemo treatments so far, each lasting 3 days each. She has an NG tube ran from her stomach out her nose and to a pump that keeps the fluids pumped out of her stomach and that helps some but she can't come home until they can figure out the stomach problem. We live in a small town but we do have a new Cancer Center here and the doctors are great but they admit they have never had a case of this type of cancer before . I do have faith in them and they have been honest with us as far as the outlook goes but it seems like they are just stumped on what to do to get the stomach working again. She has a feeding tube ran into her small intestine so she is getting nutrients. The chemo has started shrinking the tumor which is great but I know she would be much more comfortable if she could come home.

Anyone had this problem and can give any suggestions ? They have given her Reglan and a couple other drugs to try and make it work again but nothing has worked so far.

Thanks for any advice !

Also, don't know if it matters but it has not spread to any other vital organs. They classified it at a stage 4 due to the size of it and the fact that it is both inside and outside the stomach but they say it could be a stage 3 also because it has not spread to any other vital organs.

I am so sorry about your mother's advanced cancer. I do not have any advice for you but wanted to say that you and your mother are in my thoughts and prayers.

Thank you Jim ! I hope someone can give some advice on this. I read up on the stomach not working and read that sometimes the Vagus nerve gets damaged. There is a medical device that resembles a defribulator but it is a Vagus nerve stimulator and it has been used for situations like this before. I asked the doctor about it today and he said he had never heard of it being used for a stomach cancer patient. He said they usually use it on people with epilepsy. He is going to check up on it more he said. All that is preventing her from coming home and finishing her Chemo on an outpatient basis is figuring out the stomach problem.

Thanks again !
