I am 48 years old and have been having perimenopausal symptoms for the past 5-7 years. Several years ago, my gynecologist advised an endometrial biopsy due to some symptoms I was having. She was not able to get into the cervix in her office, so I had to go to an outpatient surgery center where she also performed a D & C. The results were normal. At my last annual exam in 6/04, I reported some very minor spotting which occurred between periods (it only happened once). She advised another biopsy, which I refused at the time because I assumed it was still due to perimenopausal hormone fluctuations. Since that time, I have had another one or two episodes of very minor spotting (one day) between periods, and once or twice after doing aerobics or after sex. Also, my cycle has gotten shorter and more irregular. I do not get any heavy bleeding at all. I have also had pain during sexual intercourse on a couple of occasions. I reported this to my GP and she sent me for a pelvic and transvaginal ultrasound and referred me to my GYN for a biopsy. The GP reported my ultrasounds to me as normal, but when I saw my GYN she read them and said the lining of my uterus is thicker than normal for my age, and the report says "slightly prominent uterus". She performed the biopsy successfully in her office 3 days ago and said I should come back to see her in 2 weeks for the results. I have also been having a lot of abdominal symptoms the past month - fullness, bloating, and lots of gas after eating, as well as stabbing pains in various areas of my chest, underarms, and in my groin. I am worried sick about 1) whether I have cancer, and 2) if I do, did I wait too long and it is likely to have spread at this point? I am interested in what type of symptoms any of you with this cancer had prior to your diagnosis, and how fast this type of cancer grows?

Hello

Abdominal symptoms can be due to many reasons. Endometrial cancer is not something that grows very fast, but it is very treatable. I think what you did was reasonable, as you are in the perimenopausal age and irregular menses may happen. Now you got the biopsy and it is only a matter of time until you know what it is.

best regards,
Leo
