Hi. I recently heard about a nationwide study opening for patients in pain related to or associated with cancer. To participate, you must be between the ages of 18 and 80, experience an average of 1-4 flares of pain per day. These flares of pain are commonly called breakthrough pain. You also need to be taking daily opioid medication to control your regular/persistent pain. Some examples of opioid medications are below:

? Morphine
? Transdermal Fentanyl
? Hydrocodone
? Oxycodone
? Hydromorphone

And in case you don't want to take opiates, you can always take Tramadol (and opiate antagonist?).

I was on 120mgs of Oxycotin for 8 months as it did manage my pain, I have Chondrosarcoma, but my mind was mushy all of the time. Now, I wear a 100 mcg/h Fentanyl patch. It certainly helps with the pain, most of the time, and I'm able to keep my wits about me. I've been on the patch for 5 months now but doesn't do much for "bad" pain days. When the bad days come, they are bad, believe me. I don't take anything for break though pain, not much left really, I've tried pretty well everything else, I think? I've always been able to handle pain, in my younger years, football, lacrosse and rugby but this cancer has taken a toll on the 6' 8" 300lbs frame of mine. I'm not 300lbs anymore and with the weight went the strength.
