Hello Everyone! I'm new to the forums. My name is Karen. I'm doing some research for my father who is a cancer survivor. He was diagnosed back in 2003 and went through 2 months of radiation. Its been over 5 years now. And hes still suffering from the side effects. He hasn't complained about not being able to taste food or dry mouth. However he is having a very very difficult time swallowing and would often cramp up from his mouth to his neck when he speaks. He has no control over his tongue. Its like all the nerves around that area are gone? Doctors said his neck is shrinking. He's also has cramps on his shoulders and his back. This all happened after the radiation. He just recently went through Hyperbaric Oxygen Treatment last year. But it didn't really do much for him. He's been really depressed because of this. And i'm not sure what I can do to help him except to look for answers from other cancer survivors. Doctors keep saying they cant do anything for him. Or they keep referring him to therapist or nutritionist or dietitian. nothing seems to be helping. Are these normal side effects of a nasopharyngeal cancer survivor? Or are these symptoms of old age? When I look on the websites, I never see anything about cramps.
My dad is now 60 years old. He wad diagnosed when he was 54. He also has high blood pressure. Does frequent check ups. Other than that, he's okay.
It was difficult for me when I found out that my pops had cancer. Then I notice it was even more difficult after he finished his radiation because of the side effects. And everytime he talks to me about it, all i can do is sit there and stare at him feeling bad and sorry because I cant do anything to make him feel better. I moved from Florida back to New York recently, with my boyfriend hoping it would cheer him up alittle. :/ didnt help much.
I really hope anyone on these forums, if you are or know anyone thats going through or gone through treatment, get better soon! And stay strong for yourself or your loved ones!  |

Hi Karen. I am so sorry about your father's cancer and lingering problems.
I do not know the answer or even have much in terms of suggestions about his swallowing problem. I have not had his type of cancer. Is he going to a major medical and cancer research center? If not, get a referral to one to see it they can to anything for him.
Sorry that I cannot be more helpful. Maybe someone else will post a reply who knows more than I.
You and your father are in my thoughts and prayers.

i thank you for your post regardless.
he went to beth israel in new york. suppose to be one of the best cancer research centers. they got rid of the cancer and it hasnt came back. but they werent able to help him with the side effects. ill keep researching.

Yea i'm afraid that might be the case too.
Which really sucks. A year after he did the radiation, I moved to Jacksonville and found out about proton therapy. I wish I would have known of this treatment before. |
