My mother was diagnosed with Stage IV Colon cancer in 2002. She had a colon resection, attempted chemotherapy, was nauseated and refused anymore treatment. A year or so later a growth appeared on her right arm, it was biopsied. Malignancy, same cell as colon cancer. She had a round of radiation and the tumor size was reduced. 2004 it started growing again and this time radiation did not help. The tumor is now huge, it begins in the right deltoid, goes up to her arm pit, then around her back almost to the spine and almost down to the bottom of her rib cage. The pain is tremendous, we are assuming that the brachial plexus is involved, and the weight of the tumor is causing additional pain from the two herniated discs in her neck. Her pain is sometimes unbearable - she takes MS Contin 15 mg, twice a day, hydrocodone and liquid morphine for breakthrough pain. She is confined to bed with her head elevated to about 45 degrees because this is the only way she gets some relief. In addition to the pain, the site burns and is very hot to touch. Radiologist says he has done all he can do, physician suggested a nerve block to basically kill that part of her body but he hasn't been able to find anyone willing to do this. ANY SUGGESTIONS?

Hello

I am sorry that you've been going through this. It sounds like the problem is really related to pain. There are possible procedures to block the nerver, but as you mentioned, it might be difficult to perform. You can always seek other opinions and see if there are any other options to control her pain.

best regards,
Leo
