Hi--I'm 72 years old and have been in good health even with both hips replaced.
Last thursday I noticed a small bump on the right side of neck and it was quite painful especially when I swolloed. I went to our small town dr. and she sent me to the west valley host.
They ran some tests and found a INHOMOGENEOUS MASS MEASURING 2.6 x 2.1 x 2.3 NO BLOOD FLOW SEEN.
There was several tests performedsuch as US SOFT TISSUE HEAD/NECK, 2 cat scans. POCT Glucose and CBC with Automated Differential. Also a TSH and a T4 and a Comprehensive Metabolic Panel.
The Doctor, Dr George Shepard, reccomened a Percutaneous biopsy of the mass of the right lobe of the thyroid gland.
My question is--in our area of Phoenix, there seems to be a lot of Drs that want to treat the thyroid problems with holistic methods.
What would you suggest?

Hi,

Sorry to hear you are having these issues with the thyroid. I can relate that two of my SIL's have Hashimoto's disease. One has always worked with natural type doctors, but she was put on Synthroid. The other had surgery because the thyroid was enlarged, to make sure it wasn't a malignancy, and is also on Synthroid. A friend of mine and myself have elevated levels and both of us were put on Synthroid too. Seems the normal course of action. I'm not sure what they are recommending as a holistic treatment for you.

These are just examples of a variety of people, so you can see how different situations were all treated with the same drug.

Good luck!

Thank you so much for your personal experience.
Your situation has given me such a better outlook about what I'm facing.
As I mentioned on 11/6/08 I experianced a pain and a lump on my right side thyroid. The next day 11/7/08 I went to my hme doctor and she imediatly sent me to the emergency hosp in Phoenix. There they found a nodule on my left lung and a mass on my right thyroid.
The worry starts--this morn 11/10/08 my wife and I went to our home doctor and She has faxed all the west valley hosp records to the Mayo Clinic.
Now we are waiting for the phone call from Mayo.
Surprising how fast the Doctors respond to a situation like this.
God bless all of you on The Cancer Forums and especially all our wives for their support.
I'll let all of you know what takes place.
With GOD everything is possible.

Hi again,

I'm very glad that they are pursuing this in an expeditious manner and bringing in other facilities to consult. A nodule in the lung is nothing to let go. Did they mention whether it was calcified or not?

I send my highest hopes and prayers for an easy and quick resolve to this problem.

Best wishes,
PBJ

Well, I'm getting educated with this problem. Seems that my home Dr is a little bit mixed up. They led me to believe that the Mayo Clinic would take me right in and help with my problem.
It seems that they cannot make a reservation for 2-6 weeks fo me to come in.
Is it normal to wait for a simple biopsy? I cannot figure what to do.
They don't even return a call. I think I'll check Phoenix for another answer. Is there anyone that has a good experiance with a Doctor in the Phoenix area or even in the Palm Springs area?
Maybe I am expecting too much, but this is a worrisome issue.

Finially located a surgon that will take a look at my thyroid on the 19th at 9AM. Don't know what to expect.
The cancer specilist that our friend reccommended has gotten the appointment for me. The surgon is located next bldg to west valley hospital. Maybe he will take the biopsy and we'll go from there.
Also, I understand that this surgon will reccommend a lung specialist for the nodule on my left lung---so many specilists--soo much time inbetween.

After reading of so many heart-rendering cases on this forum, I am thanking God that this was caught so early.

I think the hardest is the waiting between Doctors. They are all specilists I guess.

Is this a slow-growing or is it a fast growing thing. The waiting is terrible.

I praise God that you are all with one-onother and especially the prayers.

Just had my biopsy 1/9/09, was told that it will be about 10 days before I get an answer. Was a lot of fun? At least that's behind me.
