Let me start off by saying, I am an employee of a cancer center. I work with some of the best doctors in Florida at my center.
I am 24, married and have two children. I have a bump in my mouth. On the inside of my cheek. It looks like a big canker. Im a little worried about it. Im scared. I really dont want the doctors to look at it, and tell me bad news. I also dont feel right having them look at it. Embarassed. What do you think??? I feel so stupid.

Hi - Don't panic!

Firstly, if it has been there for two years and not changed, it is at least stable. Secondly, here dentists check the mouth for possible cancer development. Have you asked your dentist to do this? As specialists in the care of the mouth, they should know what to look for.

I think that worrying about a lump can be worse than the truth. Put your fear to one side and get someone to identify it.

Keep in touch.

smurphy0429, since you work with cancer patients, you know the dangers of waiting too long to get checked. I know it has been two years so it probably is nothing to worry about otherwise, you would really be sicker than you are. However, why take the chance?

You are in my thoughts and prayers. Keep us informed.

I had my last dentist look at it. He identified it as a "fistula". I have no idea what that is, and if its dangerous. He acted like it was nothing, but he's also not a specialist.
I have been very scared for a long time, and I don't know how to approach my doctors at work about it .... One of the doctors will instantly tell me lets do a biopsy, the other 2 dotors are just going to dismiss me ... I dont have insurance. Im in a boat where I just dont know what to do!
Thanks for the support.

Basically, a fistula is a hole where a hole is not supposed to be. It does not take an expert to see one; your dentist is more than qualified to see it. He/she is probably not qualified to fix it. For that you really need an ENT surgeon. Obviously, the danger level of a fistula depends on its location.

I am sorry that you do not have insurance at this time. Just try to find a doctor willing to help you.
