| My sister is having a liver scan on thursday and has been told she will probably start chemo the following week. She had a CAT scan the other day. What is a liver scan? |

My dad's internist ordered a CT scan of my dad's abdomen when the chest x-ray indicated something on the liver. After that, he had a PET scan to show what areas lighted up from his femur to his eyes.

The test is to make sure that her kidneys are functioning well. Certain chemo drugs can be harsh on the kidneys. My dad will have to have his kidney function monitored during his chemo treatment.

|
|
My sister went to hospital for blood tests after they inserted some sort of nuclear dye into her. She got a phone call from hospital today and she has to go and have 2 units of blood transfused in the morning.
She is booked in for chemotherapy next week.
Will this cause any problems. The hospital say is her blood is lower than they thought it was.
Will it cause a problem for the chemotherapy. I am presuming it is to build her up? |

Yes, it is to build her up. With any luck, she will be strong enough to take the chemo. It implies that her blood cell count is abnormally low, so her immune system is not working well. Apart from the cancer, her other problems will contribute to this, not least any dietary ones.
I do not like to tout things, but there is a product on the market that you may care to look into as it seems to help in taking chemotherapy: http://tinyurl.com/5jqqko
I am proposing to take it on my next [incipient] round of chemo.
Just make sure if she is willing and able to do something of this kind that her oncology team know that she is doing it. |

My sister went in for transfusion of 2 units of blood this morning, she has now got to go back up this afternoon for some more.
Is this normal? |

I think you will find that they do not like transfusing masses of blood in one go, and that very probably they have deliberately split the transfusion.
If your sister is very anaemic, it may require fairly drastic action. |

|

My sister had her blood transfusion today. She is sleepy and very tired and has had a few days being sick.
Tomorrow she starts gemcitabine and carboplatin treatment I just hope her blood levels are up enough to be able to have the chemo in the morning. What are the side effects of this treatment? |

Here's a link that I found some months back when a relative was being treated for colon cancer: http://www.chemocare.com/bio/ It lists many chemo drugs. You can find out how the drug is administered, what types of cancer are treated with it, and side effects. Her oncologist's office should have given her an info sheet of the chemo drugs that will be used.
Mods: It's a safe site... I have used it a lot to look up chemo drugs.
