Hopeinlife,

Please don't feel guilty. I'm sure your Mom wouldn't want you to feel that way. You have grown up and are living an adult life --- that is what all parent's want for their children. Try and stay in touch via the phone and give support to your siblings that way too. You'll feel more connected to the process. My oldest and his wife didn't live near us while my husband fought his battle and we wouldn't have wanted him to up-end his life.

Take care as your Mom begins to move into treatment.

Hopeinlife....I am sorry to hear about your mom. I know the shock and sadness you must have felt at the news. It does knock you off your feet. Hang in there. Know that reaching out to your mom daily by phone will be a big comfort to her and don't beat yourself up over not being able to be there like you want to. Enjoy your visit with her as I'm sure she will enjoy it.

Kristi....wow. I am so sorry to hear of both of your parent's diagnoses. I was my mom's caregiver and I simply can not imagine it had my dad been diagnosed at the same time. My father passed in 1990 of COPD (although I strongly suspect he had lung cancer by the time he died, but could never have withstood the testing to find out), and my mom this January. Yoiu are right....we do what we have to do. We do find the strength from deep inside to do what needs to be done. You face a unique challenge due to your own health issues. But your posts tell alot about you. I suspect your own challenges have made you a much stronger woman and you are a survivor.

My best to you both as you begin a difficult journey. God bless.

[quote="pbj11"]Mary,
Just a little correction. Some NSCLC is slower growing, especially the BAC type. It is all about the cell differentiation. The less differentiated, the faster the cancer grows and my husband's cancer grew very quickly. Not as fast as SCLC, but right behind it.

Hi Pbj; I appreciate the clarification. I will be more careful about this. I was told about the NSCLC being slow growing and just thought it was all of that type. We got this from all the doctors as we kept questioning how it could be so far along and they kept saying it was probably there for over a year.

Anyway, that is where I got that and I will just be more careful. I would never want to mislead anyone. Appreciate it and the manner in which you let me know that. Smile

Mary,

No problem. Maybe that's why your hubby was able to have surgery and that is always a great thing! Unfortunately my husband's grew like wildfire, which wasn't such a good thing. I'm sure it was growing for months before he was diagnosed though, as he did have a heavy tumor burden at diagnosis. Still, he did pretty good as long as he was on chemo. Without chemo, it would have taken him very quickly.

God bless to you and the hubby on his recovery. I posted under your other topic.

Thank you everyone.

I am in Norther CA right now. I spoke with my sister last night. My mom had her first follow-up to the oncologist two days ago. They redo the X-ray yesterday and will redo the MRI for the brain today.

She has been on Tarceva for 17 days and they want to check if it helps.
She is starting to have rashes on her faces. She eats alot but is still tire very often, sleep more than usual. It has metastasize to her bones as well so maybe that's the reason. She's also on Zometa once a month to help put calcium back to the bones. The doc said cancer caused bones to lose calcium and Zometa helps reverse the process.

I will be flying out this Sat and stay with her for four days. I'm fortunate to have a boss that understand.

Hi Hope,

Glad to hear you will be visiting your Mom. I hope Tarceva does miracles for her! The Zometa will help strengthen the bones and that will help to prevent additional bone mets from growing, or at least that's the theory. My husband was on it too and never got any more bone mets once he started.

Good luck and thanks for updating us. Enjoy your visit!
