I was recently diagnosed with dysplastic nevus syndrome and my dermatologist said that I have a higher risk of getting melanoma because of this. In October I have an appt with at the University of PA but they are trying to get me i sooner.

Both my aunt and my mom have skin cancer - they have basal cell carcinoma, and my aunt also has a form of breast cancer - intraductal carcinoma.

I was adopted, so I'm not related by blood but it's still pretty scary for all of us.

Hope to meet some new people in here. I know I don't have skin cancer but I was hoping that you will accept me in here anyway with my increased risk.

Sharon

Hi Sharon, I am very sorry about your health concerns. I hope that the can get you in before October.

I am not sure if Melanoma is inherited. I do know that there is a racial connection: people whose ancestry come mainly from Norther Europe are more likely to develop Melanomas that people from Southern European countries. Red heads and light skinned individuals are more likely than darker skinned individuals.

Since your doctor says you are likely to develop a Melanoma, the general suggestion is to stay out of the sun as much as possible. If you have to be in the sun, use a sunblock with an SPF of 40 or higher.

I did move your topic to the melanoma and skin cancer form so that others will see your post and be able to share their thoughts, suggestions, and support with you.
