My poor sister, went to hospital today and had another pet scan, also radiotherapy and chemotherapy. Apparently she was very sick. They are trying to shrink the tumour on her lungs and blast the adrenal tumour. My mum seems to think that if they are shrunk then they may operate. Is this what usually happens. I am so worried for her.

Hi samchaney, I am so very sorry about your sister's advanced cancer. Yes, it is not uncommon for doctors to use chemo and/or radiation to shrink a tumor prior to doing surgery. It really depends on the specific location of the tumor. For example, if it is close to a major blood vessel they might want to shrink it in order to be able to have better margins.

Your sister is in my thoughts and prayers.

I got it wrong, my sister had radiotherapy today, not chemotherapy. She is having another treatment tomorrow,, then a break for the weekend, then two more goes next week. She was so very badly sick she had to call out an emergency doctor today, although she has been vomiting for the last few weeks.

It is not looking good.
