I have been complaining of back pain around the middle of my back going around and into the ribs for a couple of years. now. I have gone to 2 different md's. They both did chest xrays and said they were normal. Last May they said it was my gallbladder and removed it. The pain never went away. Then I was told it was acid reflux. The medicine never helped. My doctor suggested therapy for the pain. My husband was after me to go see a chiropractor. I did. He took xrays and did a scan of my back. He said I was in the top 10 of worse backs he has ever seen. I have been going to him for about 2 months now for adjustments. My ribs feel better, I can at least turn around while driving without terrible pain. I still have terrible pain in my back especially when I breath, which is always of course. My dad died of lung cancer at 57 and I have been a smoker since I was a teenager. I am now 50. My chiropractor told me that he tought it would take a long time to get my spine where it should be and that is why I am in pain. He told me he would send me for a csan if I wanted. I think when I go tommorrow I am going to ask him to send me. Has anyone else had back pain with lung cancer? I don't cough alot, but am always clearing my throught. Not alot of mucus at all. What is your thoughts?

((Tina)),

I'm sorry that you have been experiencing long term pain. It's a curse that few people understand unless you've lived through it.

You have had x-rays, which didn't pick up on any cancer and the chiropractor seems to know you have a misaligned or problems with your spine. If he is willing to send you for a cat scan, and your insurance will cover it, this might be well worth your peace of mind.

Having lost a parent because of lung cancer, I'm sure this weighs heavily on you. This is my biggest fear for my own children, down the road.

My husband didn't have any pain, but that's typically how lung cancer is -- a silent disease. He had the text-book coughing up of bloody sputum and sudden onset of shortness of breath that clued us in that something was wrong. I do have to say there are others who do get pain in the back from lung tumors, pleural effusion, or bone mets and sometimes that is how it is detected. Everyone is different.

Have the test for your own sake. I sincerely hope that the chiropractor helps with the pain. I'm also 50, but at 26 I had bad problems with back muscles and, even though I spent 10 days in the hospital, it was a chiropractor who got me up and able to function again. I also had one vertebrae that would go out of whack and throw my entire ribcage off-kilter making every breath painful. It doesn't take much to cause a heap of pain when it comes to back problems.

Good luck and keep us posted.

pbj,
Thank you so much for responding about the chiroprator helping you. I was really hesitant on going. My dad never had any pain with his cancer. It wasn't until he came down with pnemonia that we even found out he had cancer. He passed away a month later. It was awful, but it would of been much worse watching him suffer.

Tina, My sister had lower back pain for over 4 months prior to being diagnosed with lung cancer. Her doctor first took xrays and said she just had arthritis, then 1 month later said she maybe had a bruised rib. When the pain contunued to worsen, her dr. sent her to a physical therapist for possible muscle spasms. Her pain worsened to the point where she could almost not walk(this was almost 4 months after the original pain)----her dr. FINALLY ordered a cat scan--and found cancer throughout her body. Long story short---10 days later after biopsies--they found that it had originated in her lungs and metastasized. My suggestion to you is get a scan---NOT to scare you by any means--but it is better to know and deal with it early. Please get a scan-----if my sister would have been diagnosed earlier, we may not be going thru this horrible agony now. God Bless you and good luck. Cin

Everyone,

Do let me re-emphasize one of the lines from my prior post:
--------
I do have to say there are others who do get pain in the back from lung tumors, pleural effusion, or bone mets and sometimes that is how it is detected. Everyone is different.
----------

I also did suggest going for a CT scan, for peace of mind to make sure there is nothing else happening.

I don't want anyone to think I wasn't cognizant of the other scenarios leading to a cancer diagnosis by any means.

You guys know me better than that! Wink

Tina, although this is my first reply to you, I have followed your story since your first post. I certainly will keep you in my prayers tomorrow.

I got my results back today. They said the examination was normal except for a minimal amount of plaque like material in the trachea wich could be related to phlegm from bronchitis. They didn't show anything relating to cancer. Thank god. I sat and cried. My heart goes out to all of you that are suffering or have a loved one that is. I also can't express my thankfulness enough to all those that showed concern for me. God bless and my prayers are with you every day.

Hi there,
My dad just found out 4 months ago that he has lung and bone cancer and yes, his back is the first thing that started hurting and so far it's still the one pain he can't get rid of even after radiaton and some chemo.
I wish you all the best. If you've already had x-rays and things done and nothing has come up be thankful that it's just a back pain and nothing more. Take care.
