Cancer of the Tongue and Tonsil Advise pls.

I have recently been diognosed with Sqamous Cell of the tonsil, tounge and lymphnode. I have had the tonsil removed and now await a more diaognostic surgery to determine size and such to see if I am a candidate for trans oral robotic surgery which would replace the Maxifacial surgery.

My questions are:

1.) Has anyone else had this kind of surgery and how was it?

2.) I read that the survival rate is that 49 % die in 5 years or so. Is this typical or am I reading this information incorrectly?

3.) I also read that 30 % get it back, is this a true stat?

4.) They are talking about reconstructing my tongue, Won't the radiation damage the new graft?

I have so many other questions and concerns but these highlight my concerns and Doctors seem to not want to commit to an answer.

Hi John.
I am very sorry about your cancer. While I do not have any experience with head and neck cancers, one of or other administrators is an oncologist who specializes in those types of cancers. I will try to contact him.

John,

I looked through your profile, and see that you're also on the oral cancer foundation board. Check out their forums and see if they might be of help.

Here's some interesting things:

1) Were you ever a smoker or tabacco user?
2) Alcoholic?

If not, what you should do is ask for the tumor specimens to be sent to

This is important, because if it is determined that HPV caused the cancer, then you have a much better prognosis. There is even talk about tailoring the treatments for patients with HPV diagnosis.

Anyhow, what were the symptoms and how was the diagnosis made?
