Can chemotherapy therapy cause cirrhosis of the liver or other liver damage? My sister had 6 rounds of chemo and radiation treatment for 6 weeks due to colon cancer. Now she has cirrhosis of the liver and she had bleeding from her esophagus, which they have banded to stop the bleeding.

Hi Kevin, although you did not say what chemotherapy your sister is taking, many chemotherapy agents have to be filter out by the liver and can cause liver problems. Her medical team should be checking her blood for liver enzymes and creatinine to make sure her liver and kidneys are working correctly.

Her doctor should have talked to her about that before they started! Which treatment she has? Chemo is toxic but they should be monitoring situation in order to prevent these things to happen.
