hi all, my friend is going through chemotherapy at the moment (she has just had her 2nd one yesterday) she seemed not so bad after the first one but she had a very very sore mouth. i have read somewhere on here (i think) that if the doctors know you have this problem there is an anti tablet you can take before (like the anti sickness one). please does anyone know of this. also could you tell me if each time you have chemo it gets worse or are the symtoms pretty much the same after each session. i appreciate all you time and thoughts. thankyou x

Hi halobabe, I am very sorry about your friend's cancer. One of the side effects of some chemotherapies is to reduce a person's immunity to infections. I do not know what is causing your friend's mouth sores. When my father was taking chemotherapy, he got a bad case of thrush. The doctor gave him a liquid to gargle with and it worked somewhat. Regardless, have your friend talk with her own medical team about her sores. They should be able to help.

Chemos have all sorts of side-effects, and these do change as the body adapts to the effect of the chemo. The doctors should be made aware if she is having problems.

Mouth sores can be helped by a solution of bicarbonate of soda [baking soda] - 1 part b/soda to 10 parts warm water. It does no harm if swallowed and is very effective on mouth problems.

i just hqad surgery thursday on my left breast. a calcium lump that they told me that day was cancer. i thought since they got it that that was it but when i went the next day to my doctor and asked her when i should come back she said i won't see her now i need a team of doctors. i was floored! i guess i figured i could never get anthing like this (stupid i guess) but now i am in a panic. i can't really find any information on this type of cancer or what i might be facing. i win't know until thursday what stage it is but while i am waiting i find it hard to think of anything else but the cancer and can't stop crying. i am 50 and my dad's mother had breast cancer but i don't know what kind nor does anyone else on that side of the family.

has anyone else had this type of cancer out there and if so can you give me an idea on what i might expect?

Hi suzique - presumably you had a calcification in the breast (very common), and a biopsy has shown that it is cancerous.

You will be referred to an oncology team [specialists in cancer and its treatment] for the next step.

You should ask your medical team whether it is hormone positive or negative - this influences treatment plans - and what stage it is at. But it sounds as though it has been caught early, so you will have an excellent chance of recovery.

When will you be seeing the oncologists?

I am going to the doctor tomorrow at 2:15. My orginal appointment was thursday but they called me today and want me to come in early. Which had freaked me out but like my husband says they most likely know everyone freaks out and they want to get them in as soon as possible, at least I hope that is the reason. thank you for replying so quick you have given me a ray of sunshine.

I am glad they are not making you hang around! Make sure you have someone with you at this appointment - a second set of ears is invaluable.

You might like to look at this site: http://www.cancersurvivors.org/Resources/questions.htm#tests

It will help you to make a list of questions you want to ask. Don't be afraid to ask; take a notebook with your questions in it and write the answers down. Get the doctor to spell anything you are not sure about.

~Good luck - let us know how it goes.
