He just told me an hour ago they can't operate. Originally went to the hospital on Saturday. The operation was scheduled for Monday. They pushed it back and decided to send him into Boston to meet with other surgeons. I was told yesterday they would do a surgery within 4 days and that they needed one of about 6 miracle surgeons in the area to perform.
Spoke with him today and he stated "It's the worst kind of tumor in the worst location...there will be no surgery". He sounds strong and told me to be strong. Is there any other surgeons in the Boston area to contact? I'm aware not much can be done. I have read stories of similar situations where someone did find that miracle surgeon and they successfully removed the tumor.
He's a good man with 2 young sons and a beautiful kind wife. |

Finless, my heart is breaking for you. I am so very sorry about your father's cancer. As you can read in my story (links in my signature block) I have had to face brain cancer myself. In addition to my own cancer, my mother died of a GBM grade IV which was also inoperable. I am guessing that is the type of cancer your father has since a GBMIV is as bad as they come.
I wonder if the decision not to operate was the surgeons of your father's? It sound like it might have been a decision your father made. My mother opted for no treatment. That was the best decision in her case but each person is different.
My advice to you is to make the most of the time your father still has left. Try to make his life worth living and enjoying. Spend as much time with him as you can.
My thoughts and prayers are with you and your father.

I'm so sorry about your dad's Cancer, and you not being able to treat this. Obviously it is highly advanced.
Sounds like your dad is brave and proud man. It also sounds like he may have decided this too, or is strong on the advice of no treatment. He sounds strong and positive- if that makes sense.
Spend as much time as you can with your Dad while you can. Do some fun things, some special things, and relive the old times. The good times and even the bad. Say what you must, do what you can.
Also give yourself some time and space- it's a shock for you to, you must be prepared and have gave this some thought also.
Please take care of yourself, let us know how things are going when you can. Feel free to post, rant and rave or just let us know whats happeing.

I am very sorry to hear about your Father's brain tumour. I pray you have been able to talk more "in depth" with your Father since you posted here last week! I pray you have more clarity on your Dad's condition over the weekend. Do you live close by your Father? I pray there is not a great distance between your homes & lives!
My Bro was told his GBM IV was inoperable because it was on his brainstem. We were devastated when we heard from him last Feb. He has subsequently had 2 surgeries to debulk tumour. It was under 1cm at diagnosis, so quite small but grew aggressively in the early stages, which eventuated in his 1st surgery in May 07. He was left disabled from this & has been in a wheelchair since with paralysis down his L side. 2nd surgery was more successful in Oct 07 with no deficits. He has been on Temodal (chemo) since diagnosis. This is the Gold star treatment for this type of brain tumour. This chemo has kept the tumour in check since. In saying that, there has always been enhancement of the tumour on MRI's, also with GBM IV's the tumour grows out in tentacles from the main tumour & these parts of the tumour are really not distinct on MRI's. My Bro had his 2nd surgery in Sep 07 for debulking purposes & will undergo a further MRI in 10 days. We pray for a miracle for him constantly because the survival odds for this grade of tumour are very low.
It is impossible to comprehend that in this day & age of medicine that your Father cannot be helped with surgery. Although we are lucky there are currently alternatives to surgery in the form of chemo & radiation for Brain Tumours!
Can your Father pursue these avenues for his brain tumour?
