Hello Queensland Girl,

I am so sorry to hear of your fathers illness and know that you and your family are in my thoughts and prayers. This is a very tough time for you all and you will need all your strength staying positive for your father.

I lost my 20 year old son to Metastatic Colorectal Cancer in Feb 2007. It is presumed that his cancer was familial as his Paternal Grandfather has had 2 bouts of Bowel Cancer and his Paternal Great Grandmother died of Liver Cancer. I know the last thing at the moment you would want to think of is to have a Colonoscopy...however Please Please Please organise this as soon as you are up to it.

I am also in Queensland and will pm you with my details. If there is anything I can do, even if it is just lending an ear or a shoulder - then please dont hesitate to contact me.

Susan

Hello All,

Just to let you know my Dad passed away on January 7. He seemed frail on Christmas, but still mostly lucid. On New Years Eve I had to get him taken to hospital as he stopped being able to swallow, I was worried that he wasn't able to take his pain medication. Dad was adament that he didn't want to die in hospital. It was our intention to get him stabilised and return home and to this end I had already organised palliative care at home.

By Friday 4th, he was already confused and he needed to have a morphine syringe driver pump inserted for pain management. On Friday night we organsied to get the family to return, for some of them it was a two day drive. He was starting to fade and needed his morphine increased another two times. On Sunday night the rest of the family managed to make it and the grandkids all got to say hello. He managed to open his eyes when they spoke to him. On Monday morning he had worsened but everyone came to say hello, then he deteriorated rapidly.

He struggled for breath and his suffering was intense and he fought to the end, only his daughters stayed by his side it was too traumatic for the rest of the family especially the kids. We watched him take his last breath and at 6.45pm on January 7, my hero, my Dad passed away.

I hope there is an afterlife, as he would be with Mum now.

Regards,

Queensland Girl

Queensland Girl, I am very sorry about your father's death. I am glad he was lucid during Christmas. I hear his desire not to die in a hospital. Both of my parents died while hospitalized because the where so very sick at the end. However, I too would want to die peacefully in my own bed.

You are in my thoughts and prayers.
