Hi Everyone! I am new to this website, but it is great to see that such websites exist.

I am here just to throw out a few questions as I don't really know much about Cancer and I have just come across my own experience with it recently.

My father has skin Cancer and has had it for a few years now but it seems relatively harmless in comparison to some others because of the way it was handled and is being managed. I am 19 years old and I just made a trip home from my university to spend a little time to relax and see everyone. When I was home, my mother noticed a spot on my back that resembles that of my fathers (my mother has been monitoring the spots on my fathers back for the past few years) and apparently this spot has grown quite rapidly over the past few months since I came to university in September.

Is this something I should be worried about?
What are the common causes of skin Cancer?
If I were to post a picture could it be easily identified?
What is the next step?

Sorry to just throw this all out there, but I'm sure there are others who have had the same situation come up or have had something related happen, so if anyone could share some info on this it would be greatly appreciated.

Also, sorry for the double post (cancer prevention) I didn't mean to put that there but it may very well prove to be productive as well, but admin, feel free to delete if it is inappropriately placed. Thanks again!

Hi Scott
Glad you found our cancerforum website. Lots of good information, support, comfort & understanding here.
Was your Dad's skin condition a melanoma?
If your spot on your back has changed as rapidly as your Mum suggests I would recommend a consult with a Dr & referral to a skin specialist. Don't delay because it's always wise to get these things checked out to rule out any NASTIES!
As for posting a picture...there are no skin cancer experts on this forum so it really would be of no benefit to do this. As I suggested earlier take yourself off to the Dr for an examination.
I hope this helps & once again welcome to this forum.
Cheers, Aussie Angie.

Thanks so much for the speedy reply.... there is a walk in clinic here at my university and I will go see a doctor to get a referral to a specialist as suggested.

Hi,

I couldn't agree more. If the place is changing, get to a doctor. With any cancer (if it is) the early the dx, the better the prognosis. I would go to a dermatologist. They are the ones that would do the biopsy to see if it is cancer and what kind.

Best wishes

I am concerned that you think skin cancer isn't as bad as other cancers. This tells me that you might not go see the university medical help as quickly as you should. Take this seriously and go and do what is right for yourself!
