I have what may seen like a very obvious question, but it is troubling to me. I was diagnosed in Jan 04 with stage 2 BC (mixed pathology of IDC, ILC and some in-situ). have done a mast, chemo (dose-dense) and just finished rads. I am 46 - have 2 sisters. My older sister (who will be 50 this year) is taking this very seriously - has had mammograms since age 40 and immediately talked to her doc about her risk now that she has a sister with BC (no other family history of any CA in our family). My other sister (age 43) has never had a mammogram and resisting getting one. She has a 3 year old child she is still nursing and uses that as her excuse (i'm sure the child would be happy to give up nursing - she is the one holding on). How much does her risk increase now that she has a sibling with BC - how much should we be pushing her?? thanks, Cathy

Cathy,

As you know, the fact of having a first-degree relative with breast cancer increases her risk of breast cancer.

A well-known and validated approach to estimate her risk is the NSABP model, available at the NCI website at: http://bcra.nci.nih.gov/brc/start.htm

This may be able to give you some numbers to talk to her. I feel that it is very important that she has adequate screening with mammograms. For first degree family members, screening should begin 10 years before the age of diagnosis of the index patient, which means 36 years in your case.

good luck !

regards,
Leo

i too have a sister who is very concerned over her increased risk and her children (daughter) also. i don't really know what to tell her, except to keep getting mammograms and be vigilant. she want genetic counseling etc. i'm all for that but don't know the expense involved.
we have just come to find out that there is a strong family history -
our great-grandmother had bi-lateral radical mastectomy way back when, our aunt died after a 20 year battle with bc at age 72 and myself who was diagnosed at age 38w stage 4 bc. there was one generation that skipped due to the fact that there were no female children. my grandfather got prostate cancer at an early age, however. i understand there may be similar mechanisms between bc and pc.
anyway. any info or suggestions for female siblings is greatly appreciated.
thanks for this new board.
i will check back regularly.
Smile
